In keeping with the bug theme today, we are also going to learn how to draw a caterpillar. Caterpillars are one of my favorite things in nature, and this is a tutorial that I have been wanting to do for a long time now. So let’s get to it.
The first step in drawing your caterpillar really has nothing to do with the caterpillar. First, we need to pull out a stick to give our caterpillar something to cling to.
Sitting directly on the stick, draw a long oval for the body of the caterpillar. The head of the oval should be twice as thick as the tail. At this point you will end up with something that looks like a drop of water, but it will soon make sense.
If you have noticed, caterpillars have very large legs. They look more like stumps than legs. To make them, draw about six or seven semicircles under the caterpillar's body that will wrap around the stick.
In addition to the stocky hind legs, the caterpillars also have three clawed legs on the sides of the body near the head. To make them, draw three thin triangles, each of which gets smaller as they get closer to the top.
Clean up any leftover lines from the previous steps and you should start to see your caterpillars take shape.
Now we need to create the head of the caterpillar by drawing a semicircle near its front legs. As you can see, the head of the caterpillar is located slightly inside its body, so it looks like it has a leather hood around it.
Also gives him a large oval eye near the end of his head.
At this point, you're pretty much done with your caterpillar. All that remains is to add the final details.
